ABBOTT MILL / THE EAST END DEN

Sitting on a waterway that makes part of the border between Newham and Barking, the red brick building might pass at a glance for one of London's trendy Victorian industrial conversions. Closer inspection, however, reveals chipped edges and filled in windows - maybe it's shabby chic. sometimes, there are cars in the driveway and lights on for every floor. sometimes, the place looks empty.

however many people call it home, it seems like they keep large dogs.

for decades now, this has been the lair of the East End Pack. it's intended to be a safe, secure space for the faction, open to all members including both werewolves and their few allies. those needing - or simply wanting - to stay here are welcome to, with ample space renovated and fitted to be suitable for residence. everything needed is provided by members.

on full moons, the building is essentially put into lock down, with members of the pack that have difficulty controlling themselves being restrained to avoid damaging others or themselves.

EXTERIOR

clearly a relic of the industrial revolution, the old mill is a hulking building of brick, stone, and glass. it's an impressive looking place, with many high windows and a roof partially of glass. the keen-eyed might notice that there are a few broken windows or boarded up panes, but all of them seem to be towards the same end of the building.

The building itself is surrounded by high walls of the same brick, though it's possible to find parts where it has crumbled - or been broken. There are only two gates; the main entrance, a sliding gate in grand cast iron features an electronic keypad complete with security intercom for guests to announce themselves - though there's seldom ever an answer; and the back gate, which is a far smaller entryway down by the river, almost hidden by overgrowth, and features the same keypad as well as padlocked chain. either gate being forced triggers an alarm. A neat sign by each informs that this is private property, and trespassers will be prosecuted. someone put up a 'beware of the dog' sign. cute.

From outside, there is little that can be seen. Between the high walls, bricked up lower windows, and the trees and shrubs growing in what sparse grounds there are, much of the place is obscured - though one might look through the gate to see an ivy-covered facade and what appears to be a garage beside the main building. Besides that, those snooping will have little luck.

all doors are rigged to set off an alarm in the building, alerting anyone inside to intruders.

INTERIOR

inside, the den is strangely varied in condition. parts of the building are renovated and livable, even if empty, while other parts appear to be on the verge of falling to pieces. much of the space inside is open, partially thanks to the original layout of the factory and partially thanks to ripped off doors and broken walls. this part of the building is generally used for training, whether that's in werewolf 101 or simply how to apply the strength they have - it's not uncommon to see gym equipment lying around amidst the odd table or chair, but the place could be mistaken for empty.

▸ the residence: the end of the building furthest from the main entrance happens to be in the best condition, and it's this section that's maintained as living space for those who have use for it. this place is pretty well kept, though that's probably in part to the lack of things lying around cluttering up the place. one of the previous alphas eventually stopped trying to decorate the place with knick-knacks after one too many of his ornamental plates got thrown. what remains is function over form - furniture that's sturdy and comfortable and in a weird assortment of styles that might put one in mind of a weird, disorganized store.

overall, it's fairly communal. there's a big main living space and kitchen, but there are other, smaller areas for people to hang out or work in and individual rooms are available - it's all been put together with a pack in mind. members tend to bring things, whether it's chairs or a rug or a set of replacement crockery, and leave them there.

the top floors of this section have always been set aside for the alpha, and recently Derek has decided to start staying in them more often than not. he promptly moved most of the furniture into the older levels for everyone else to use.

▸ the basement: the mill's old storage section has also been converted, and features ten heavily reinforced cells along with open space, all kept behind bank vault-style doors. werewolves are generally expected to come here for the duration of the full moon, when their gift is at its most uncontrollable. those particularly at risk will be put into one of the cells, but for the most part the space itself is enough. derek is almost guaranteed to be there every month, and will attempt to teach what he can about control.

EXTRA

have a question or suggestion, or would you like to plot something involving the den? feel free to ask here as well as my other forms of contact! if you think your character would choose to stay here a lot of the time, you can let me know about that too! characters are also perfectly at liberty to do what they want with their own space. if they want to paint their room pink then that's fine. maybe the pack will help decorate.

don't be a slob, don't leave wolf hair in the sinks, don't bring people who don't know over, and don't play music loud late at night. derek is not doing your laundry.

Character information
Name: Derek Hale
Age: 23
Date of Birth: 25/12/91
Canon: Teen Wolf
Species: Werewolf
Role:
EAST END PACK member. Derek would ideally be considered a senior member of the pack at this point, even if since the death of his sister he's been involved less directly. He's experienced and capable and will see pack members as his charge to guide and direct.

As for making a living, Derek is supporting himself off substantial inheritance which he is beginning to invest in property.
Rank: 1-2
Background:
Born to a long-standing family of werewolves that had taken up residence in the small Californian town of Beacon Hills, Derek was acquainted with many facets of the paranormal from childhood, granted familiarity enough that the supernatural wove into his life relatively seamlessly. It was in his sophomore year of high school that he would meet Paige, a normal human girl that he would grow to love.

Active werewolves, however, meant active hunters, and with a rising threat of hostility in the area, the alphas of the Hale pack and of other allied packs became steadily more concerned. The relatively peaceful stalemate did not remain, and the murder of betas in one pack brought about a call for bloody vengeance. As Beacon Hills grew more and more unsafe, Derek became more and more anxious about his relationship with Paige. His misgivings would be used and manipulated, not by the enemy, but by his uncle Peter, who was perceptive, sharp, and ambitious where Derek was malleable, impressionable, and vulnerable.

Encouraged and goaded by Peter and his own desperate affection, Derek would come to believe that the only way to maintain his relationship was by turning Paige into a werewolf. As orchestrated by Peter, one of the visiting alphas would give Paige the bite, and although her screaming would spark an immediate change of heart in Derek, it was, of course, too late. Paige was bitten, but instead of turning, her body rejected the change. Dying in Derek's arms, she told him that she had known he was something other and that it hadn't mattered, before asking him to end her suffering. Derek gave her a swift death, activating his werewolf curse in the process.

It was not so long after that Derek would be singled out by prolific hunters. He was targeted for his youth and lingering emotional vulnerability as a weak link, a means for the ruthless Kate Argent to learn more about the Hale pack. Intelligent, charismatic, and beautiful, Kate seduced Derek - several years her junior and still a teen - and coaxed information about his family from him. She would put it to an exact and horrific use; knowing details about the Hale's routines, their abilities, and their house, Kate instigated a devastating fire that would be ruled as nothing more than accidental. In a day, the thriving Hale family was reduced to a handful of members. Derek knew only of two still alive - his uncle Peter, now essentially comatose, and his older sister Laura, with whom he would leave Beacon Hills behind. Restless, they moved around for a while before they eventually hit London and, learning more about the East End Pack, decided to stay. Derek was absolutely content to follow her lead, still seeing her as his alpha even when she gave up the position for the sake of having a pack again.

That was, until recently, when Laura's mangled corpse was found in one of London's parks.

Personality:
Embodying the notion lone wolf is Derek's modus operandi; acerbic and abrasive, he's difficult to get along with or get close to and that seems to suit him just fine. He's got a short fuse and doesn't tend to suffer fools - or anyone else. Generally, he keeps to himself and treats everyone with a default level of contempt and suspicion, making it quite clear he'd rather be alone. Violence seems to come naturally. At best, Derek appears to be in a perpetual bad mood, which is a mild way to describe a temper forever at snapping point. The ice around him is always perilously thin - but then, he's walking on it himself.

Derek doesn't fail to understand social airs and graces. He's perfectly capable of using charm to be downright manipulative when he needs to be, whether it's smiling his way past security or encouraging a teenager to accept the Bite. He simply opts to be tall, dark, and sinister, because it serves him better. While it would be wrong to think that this is just a persona that Derek adopts - it runs far deeper than that - he still endeavours to uphold it. The scowls, the glares, the threats - these things are Derek's armour.

But even if the 'lone wolf' is who Derek wants to look like, who he wants to be, he is absolutely aware that the idea is fanciful. Wolves need packs, so does Derek, and even if he puts this across as a need for power, what he's looking for is the supportive, close community that he had in his youth, that which he lost to the fire. He wants closeness and seeks distance, burdened by his past mistakes and his own unwillingness to trust. Closing himself off from others also makes the bonds that he needs impossible to achieve. If utilizing bared teeth to keep others at arm's length is a vicious cycle, then Derek is neatly tied in the centre of the knot.

Although his vulnerability is kept carefully hidden, Derek's sense of duty comes to the fore in times of trouble. His mother had borne a role of guardianship that Derek has taken very much to heart. He's ferociously protective - even when he spends time antagonizing another character, he immediately shoves them out of the way and covers them when a direct threat shows up. His main motivation to act is when he and his are in danger, but in cases where the victim is someone entirely unknown to him he still has a knack for getting himself involved, even when he knows for a fact that, at best, he's going to be torn to shreds. He doesn't shy away from danger - in fact, he takes a lot of punishment, and perhaps that's not wholly unintentional. Derek's fiercely proud of what he is, both as a werewolf and as a Hale, but as for who he is - that much is still difficult for him to stomach.

Powers & Possessions:
POWER SCALE - Strength, ~4 (Human) | Magic, 0
Derek has spent almost a decade as a werewolf and was raised in a family that prioritized teaching him how to use his gifts. He has an excellent handle on his abilities and knows how best to control and utilize his strength, speed, and stamina.

(NOTE: I understand that this is higher than listed in the powers post, but I'm assuming that's the norm and I feel like Derek's history would set him up to be pretty strong and more competitive. If that's not okay I'm fine for dialling it down!)

POSSESSIONS - Derek currently owns little of note except a sweet car and a leather jacket. He owns one piece of Moonlight Jewellery taken from Laura's corpse, bound to his late mother and therefore useless for anything beyond sentimental value.

▸ backtagging: Absolutely! I'm happy to tag forever, tbh, so if it seems like I've dropped a thread please give me a head's up!
▸ threadhopping: Unless it's a closed/private thread, it's fine by me.
▸ fourthwalling: Mentions are fine but I'd rather go without details. I'm up for working things out if that doesn't work for your character!
▸ offensive subjects: None. If something comes up that does make me uncomfortable, I'll send you a message and we can work it out.
IC

▸ hugging this character: Depends on his relationship with the character, but generally Derek's reaction will be anything between throwing or shoving them away, or just staring them down until they get the message.
▸ kissing this character: See above. Derek isn't going to welcome contact from most people, and even then he's likely to be strained.
▸ flirting with this character: Sure! but Derek's reactions will most likely be negative unless he's trying to get something, if he reacts at all.
▸ fighting with this character: Absolutely! It's not difficult to pick a fight with derek.
▸ injuring this character: Go for it. He's a canon pincushion.
▸ killing this character: For now, no, but I'm always up for discussing possibilities.
▸ using telepathy/mind reading abilities on this character: Entirely possible. Anything in brackets is fair game but feel free to contact me for more in depth stuff.
